Aerospace Manufacturing Start-Up
Background
 Aerospace
startup in a small rural community with eight management employees, a
manufacturing facility, and equipment. Previously sold contracts amount
to $5 million. Now they need to produce.
Situation
Before
hiring its manufacturing employees, the company needs to be qualified
to do business in the aerospace industry by getting certified to Boeing's
quality standard. To launch its business, the startup must quickly create,
implement, and demonstrate proficiency with a Quality Management System
(QMS).
Project
With
the current management, the company needs to create and implement a complete
"D1-9000 Rev. A Quality Management System", Boeing's standard.
They need to train the team in time for a Boeing certification audit,
which is fast approaching.
Challenges
With
limited start-up funding, the project must be completed quickly and attain
certification on the first try. There is no room for errors. There are
a couple of significant challenges:
- Employees lack experience with Quality Management Systems.
- Remote
location requires a small plane commute, greatly limiting onsite time.

onsite twice per week for four hours, enabling managers to complete
assigned tasks between group meetings and training.
Results
The
start-up is certified by Boeing on the first audit and thus can order
raw materials and start work on contracts. The system remains much the
same today. Managers are considering expanding their manufacturing capabilities
to encompass other markets beyond aerospace by qualifying for ISO/Q9001-2000,
the latest World Standard for quality systems.
